FYI Mekelsior is a vegan activist who refuses to post any valid scientific evidence of his theories. The science is clear on diabetes treatment and diet - and although there are some vegans who do manage to control their diabetes within ADA recommendations (which aren't very tight, in my opinion) but? very few people trying vegan actually manage it, unless they weren't in bad shape to begin with. For me I had to eat LCHF and limit my carbs to only non-starchy low-gi carbs.

This is still true, there is no cure for Type 2 or Type 1 diabetes. I've looked into McDougall's "reversal" as well as that of Dr. Neal Barnards - and they're both vegans trying to promote something that seldom works for Type 2 diabetics. We're best reducing our intake of starchy carbohydrates, period. I get all my carbs from non-starchy veggies.? My numbers were so bad I cannot eat grains or starches and be healthy. I also have normal BG's now.

It is? true that there is a lot of information out there that goes contrary to what we have been thaught and fed via the media and other sources, even medical text books cater to the idea that you cannot cure diabetes type 2. It is good to investigate and wish you all the best! :)

Just from a very quick look at Dr McDougalli's website I am very leery based on his statement "The human diet is based on starches. The more rice, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and beans you eat, the trimmer and healthier you will be." This goes contrary to everything? I have learned. I had not heard of it. I will check it out and see if there are any things that are really good and if so and they are not already part of the Optimized Diet I will include them. That is how the Optimized Diet came to be. As I was searching for answers for myself I would? find some really good things and areas that were weak and could be improved upon. The USDA Food Pyramid--not to mention this video and this woman--is full of shit, . The same old hack about a grain-based, high carb/low fat diet based on faulty science. They follow the party line, give out poor advice that has resulted, since these erroneous recommendations were put in place, in an epidemic of type ll diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Yep,? my pleasure. I have slightly weak kidneys, have had abnormal readings of Bun, Creat, Pot, Gfr. So I know what happens when I eat too much protein, fat really goes down great. And yes, fish oil is great.

You might want to try cutting down on the protein and upping the fat, that is the best diet for me. When you eat a lot of protein it is harder on the kidneys. As you get older it is normal for your internal organs to not work as good. You might want to get a? blood test for BUN, CREATININE, and GFR. If your kidneys get overworked it can lead to decreased mental functioning due to build up in your blood, high levels of various byproducts of a high protein diet. Less pro and more fat.

@tickyul @tickyul I have some problems with uric acid giving me gout ! I still stick to a high protein, low carbohydrate diet to keep my weight constant. The biggest problem is from sugars. There is no such thing as fructose being low GI. This concept arose because of the incorrect definition of Glycemic? Index. I think that some people can get? away with being healthy on a fairly high carb diet, as long as they do not go overboard. The niche group that does ok on a high carb diet are the very acitve, very disciplined folks who make very good use of all the carbs they eat. I myself do not do so great on a high protein diet, the kidneys do not seem to handle the protein that great (BUN goes up, Creatinine goes up, Gfr goes down, energy down). I do really good on high fat/moderate pro/low carb.

I am not a total ideologue, I think that there are a lot of different way to maintain a healthy diet. I just cannot see how someone with diabetes can eat a lot of carbs and expect to be healthy. I just got done doing about 5 months of very low carb/no carb and? it worked great. I switched up to a different diet with more carbs and it has it's plusses and minuses. I see being flexible when it comes to eating a huge asset. High carb/low fat is something I will avoid.

Sorry, I can't remember what I said before. I am all for a low carbohydrate diet similar to Atkins or DR. Bernstein. The high protein diet works wonders for me in that I lost some 10 kg in some six months. This was some years ago now and have maintained my weight since. Keep the good word going- A high carbohydrate diet is harmful to ANYONE and should be avoided at any cost ! Like giving up ALL sugars, ALL breads, ALL pastas,? ALL grain like rice, ALL tubers like potatoes.

Uh, I think that too much protein is a waste, excess just gets converted to glucose/fat and stored. But, your rip on low carb is off the mark. The idea? behind low carb is to decrease the need for insulin which lowers the storage of fat. Ideally a low carb diet is a diet that provides adequate protein for the bodies needs, not excess. Fat is a very useful part of the diet, the Lipid/heart disease/athero hypothesis is coming under more and more fire because it is just faulty logic.

In my opinion MOST of the diet recommendations for type 2 diabetics are insane. The majority of diet recommendations are for between 40-55% of the calories from CARBS. To me, that is similar to a doctor recommending to someone with badly arthritic knees, train for a marathon. I think that if a doctor recommends that type of diet, they must buy into government propoganda or want to sell a lot of diabetes medication. On a low carb diet you can have? normal blood sugar in weeks if not days.

Thank you Duwayne. My mother has type 2 diabetes and she had a stroke about three weeks ago. Her eating habits were stuff of nightmares, and they are a thing of the past now. Your video definitely opened my eyes and brought to light the lack of awareness made available to the public especially those without computers or access to them. Dewayne, Thank you for all of your work in helping us all. You have been one of my biggest sources of info during the last 6 months of my journey to health. I have gradually eliminated almost all of the dead foods from my diet. My fasting sugar was 283 back in Jan 2010. It's now in the low 90's and? high 80's. Outstanding video! I have been telling my wife for a few years now that high fructose corn syrup is totally unnessary in food and has no use in food except to damage? the human body. It's in sooo many foods. I tried to tell my college professor that Diabetes Type II was not a disease but a result of a way of life, same as cancer. His reply, ..nuts. I informed him that I wasn't wrong and could prove it too him with a little reading and research on his part. He was fat and overweight.

Excellent advice for any Type 2 such as myself. My HbA1c has reduced from 9.4% to 5.1% by reducing the amont of starchy carbohydrate that I eat - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta, pizza etc. After? being diabetic for more than nine years, My blood glucose levels now run at non-diabetic levels.

In my opinion MOST of the diet recommendations for? type 2 diabetics are insane. The majority of diet recommendations are for between 40-55% of the calories from CARBS. To me, that is similar to a doctor recommending to someone with badly arthritic knees, train for a marathon. I think that if a doctor recommends that type of diet, they must buy into government propoganda or want to sell a lot of diabetes medication. On a low carb diet you can have normal blood sugar in weeks if not days.

Second, how is low-fat going to work on a low-carb diet? Your body needs an energy source and protein can't act as one. It has less caloric energy overall and is basically the body's last resort when it is starving and has to break down its own muscle tissue to survive. How exactly is that natural? You obviously have no freaking concept of how the Low Carbohydrate LIFESTYLE works biochemically. As long as you are not eating processed meats or meats fed absolute CRAP, which you are probably? doing yourself, then your health is FINE. Fat converts back into glucose when it is needed. Even the orthodox nutritionists consider 30% a good amount and don't think it's a good idea to go lower, for the risk of? not getting enough EFA or eating too many carbohydrates. Eating more fats is the best things a diabetic can do since GI index aside, the Glycemic Load (the total amount of carb) is still relevant and it's better to substitute fats for carbs rather than proteins for carbs, since proteins require insulin to be metabolized unlike fats.

@6:30 to 8:00, she gives incorrect info about saturated fat.If you look at the clinical trials, they all show high carb diets are worse for cholesterol than saturated fat. High cards = higher triglycerides & lower HDL (good) cholesterol. Then she says saturated fat increases LDL cholesterol, but doesn't change HDL cholesterol. But that's not true. Saturated fat increases BOTH "bad" AND "good" cholesterol. So it's a wash!! Refined carbs are what you need to avoid? to control cholesterol.

Mom has passed on now, but she lived 25 years longer than she should have. Her diet was not perfect, but she wasn't eating cheese steaks!

i work on a cancer ward and the food that we serve to people is awful! i know i won't eat it. i personally have complained and complained to no avail. unfortunately it is cheaper and easier to provide food that is dead and unhealthy. its ironic that hospitals continue to justify feeding their patients this way when we are suppose to heal people. many families bring in food for there loved ones and many of my patients? prefer not to eat than eat the hospital food!

@erniepond1: I think you are referring to Ansel Keys? I tried the low fat/high carb? diet for a couple of years. I cannot describe properly the constant painful hunger that it caused. My skin looked like HELL. I would fall asleep after a high carb/low fat meal. I bacame a big skeptic of anything that is pushed by the govenment. I saw this Swine Flu hysteria coming from a mile away. Recommend high carbs to someone with a carb metabolism disorder........DOH! Cheers!

You are entirely right. The problem arose some 40 years ago when some doctor? did some faulty animal studies on high fat diets. It was found that mice on a high fat diet died of cardiovascular diseases. BIG DISCOVERY ! So, the medical profession went overboard and "prescribed" low fat, high carbohydrate diet for EVERYONE, including diabetics.

@ernietube:? I read that a strict low glycemic diet can actually result in a WORSE blood sugar curve. The smaller insulin response in type 2 diabetics, from a low gi meal, will result in a longer rise in blood sugar, albiet a little lower. cheers!

In my opinion MOST of the diet recommendations for type 2 diabetics are insane. The majority of diet recommendations are for between 40-55% of the calories from CARBS. To me, that is similar to a doctor recommending to? someone with badly arthritic knees, train for a marathon. I think that if a doctor recommends that type of diet, they must buy into government propoganda or want to sell a lot of diabetes medication. On a low carb diet you can have normal blood sugar in weeks if not days.

Glycemic Index? is based on faulty science. The basic chemistry they used in determining GI is not correct. Please see- GLYCEMIC INDEX- why it does not worK ? Just copy and paste into SEARCH box. Glycemic Load is based on DIRECT measurement of the glycemic response to a known weight of test food. No calculation or estimation of GI from apparent weight of contained CARBOHYDRATE is needed. Although the GI Researchers can't or don't want to understand this, it is a fact
