As for the NC business, if it had an effect, it's more reasonable to think it was indirect - other officials in his administration spoke out about it even earlier, and fuck knows if he would've come out on the issue this soon after it if it? wasn't for others in his staff bringing it up. It's possible, of course, but the weight of the evidence available about Obama as a whole suggests that, while flawed in many ways, he is the rare politician more inclined to express what he sincerely believes.
