This addition extends protection to gays and illegal immigrants (two groups of people who Republicans can't stand). So that's part of the reason. Another reason they are against the act is because of the money involved. Perhaps they feel like this funding, like funding to education, can be slashed to make room for tax cuts? in the budget. As a smoker myself I've seen taxes go up on cigarettes year after year. The reason why is that smokers are an easy target, all they have to do is say "we can raise property taxes or raise taxes on smokers." Guess what option is always chosen. If you wanted to actually make a difference in the number of smokers, move tobacco onto the narcotics schedule (it would be classified as a schedule 1 narcotic btw, highly addictive and no medical use). Outlaw them or tax fairly.?
